Wedding Weekend

It’s finally here! My friends Marley and Robert are getting married this weekend! So, I just wanted to write a little something to let them know how excited I am to celebrate alongside them. Marley and I have been friends for many years, we grew up in the same home town and I eventually followed her to SMU and she became my big sister in our sorority. Luckily, she’s filled the role of big sister I never had, she is always there when I need her, but also the first one to call me on my BS. Mar is an incredibly driven and impressive lady and I’m so grateful to call her a friend. Love you lots and can’t wait to stand behind you on your wedding day! Wish you both the best and send so much love! XOXOXO

Creating a Sanctuary

I’m by no means an interior design expert, for amazing design ideas and opinions stop by my friend Julia’s blog, The Urban Slant. However, I do have some guide lines I follow to create a space. Personally, I’ve always needed my bedroom to be a sanctuary, I am always so impressed when other people can make an outlandish aesthetic work, but it’s not really in my nature. While I consistently lean towards a white and silver shabby chic look, I’ve been working on finding pieces that include minimalist color. I found Cocoa and Hearts on a sorority sister’s blog and fell in love, this is certainly a pop of color I can mix in with my current pieces. Essentially, I need to stick a couple of similar palettes on my vanity alongside some lucite trays for my perfume bottles and loose earrings. I’ll keep you updated on my next project gang!

Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day everyone! Especially my mom Theresa or as most of us know her, Big T! She and I have been through it all together. Our relationship plays a defining role in my transition to young adult. For those of you who know me and know my tendency to over analyze, worry and constantly fret- this is the woman who bears the brunt of it and I am eternally grateful. My parents divorced when I was quite young when T and I moved down to Irvine from the South Bay to start our life as mother & daughter. I used to resent our extremely suburban home but have certainly come to appreciate the comfort and consistency I find there. We have always been a tight knit unit and I had no idea how much she was willing to deal with to bring me up as the stellar young woman I am today. Essentially I do not envy the never ending days my mom dealt with while I was growing up, about the time I was finishing high school and moving away to begin college I recognized the enormous patience and commitment my mother had to being a parent. I can say without a doubt that she is the single most influential relationship in my life. She is my barometer of right and wrong, and the limitless source of my overly inflated confidence. Seriously though, this woman thinks I am the single most gorgeous human to walk this earth, and while I don’t always agree with her it really doesn’t hurt to hear on occasion.

I lucked out in the “influential women in my life” department and also get to deal with this lady, my god mother Claudia- more notable referred to as Lala. This one is a basket case in the most charming, loving way possible. She’s my mother’s best friend and she always understands my anxiety and idiosyncrasies. Between these two, I’ve learned quite a bit about being a lady.

A girl’s relationship with her mom is a volatile thing, your mother is that one person who truly knows how to dig deep and make sure you hear what she’s got to say. She’s the foundation for relationships you have with friends in the future, she’s (whether we are willing to admit it) the blue print for the woman we may become. Moms are usually the first guide to the world we have as little people and that results in a pretty strong tie. My mom and I have had a 1500 mile buffer zone for the last five years but she’s maintained an enormous amount clout in my growth from youngin to young adult. The important women in my life taught me everything I know about boys, clothes, my self image, presenting myself, design aesthetic and most importantly, they’ve taught me how to face challenges and frustration with grace. They teach me to turn to the higher power when it comes to the things I can’t control and finally they’ve honed my mean wit and really tested my patience with their absurd antics.

Who would have thought.

People have vastly different opinions regarding the other people in our world but things like this map really do bring it into perspective. We live in strange times.

yoga shmoga

Happy Friday! I’m feeling particularly sore this morning from last night’s yoga class. I’ve always been fascinated by the effect a single yoga class has on my body and general out look. As hokey as it may sound to those of you who do not practice yoga, I promise you there is some value to be found in the collective breath of a yoga studio. Whether your goal is fitness, calm, health, or even just an hour when you’re allowed to sport spandex, yoga is your best bet.

Growing up dancing, I always try to maintain an exercise routine that includes something for my mind. I know plenty who swear that they hit a runner’s high after a few miles, those who need to be outside to work out, for me I’m not sure I get it. I struggle like a little dachshund when I run and lots of outdoor exercise options are entirely too sweaty for me. However, yoga provides an amazing option for me to challenge my body while also learning to take my struggles in stride, and learn to avoid feeling overwhelmed. A much needed lesson for my neurotic head.

Plus, when you get home you get to watch movies and eat swedish fish guilt free- it’s a win win.

Today is one of those days. The sky is grey, I’m wearing a grandpa sweater and I’m ready for a nap.

Vote against Amendment One!

Now, I am a born and raised California child but I have managed to spend some time in the beautiful state of North Carolina, for those of you who have not seen anything about Amendment One in the news, here’s an article for you to read for a little background. If you are in North Carolina, if you know anyone in North Carolina, if you want to protect the rights of others, vote against Amendment One!

Crooked Tree Coffee House

For those of you in Dallas make sure you get over to Crooked Tree Coffee House, it’s a great spot to hunker down to study, read, drink coffee and snack. They have an eclectic collection of colorful furniture filling the place, local art hangs on every wall, and a quintessential coffee house soundtrack plays at all hours. They open early and close late, definitely a spot with character! Make sure and try their green tea with blackberry- it’s a perfect summer beverage!
